According to the Central Registry of Drug Abuse 64th Report in 2014, there were 8 926 reported drug abusers in HK. About 49% of reported drug abusers were never married, 34% married or cohabiting, 16% divorced or separated and the remaining 1% widowed. Males and females had similar distribution of marital status.
Nevertheless, the Registry has no data on the number of children under the care of substance abuse parents or carers.

46% of all reported drug abusers were unemployed.
Yet, their monthly expenditure on drugs was high. Reported abusers of heroin had the highest monthly expenditure of an average of HK$9,000. Those taking psychotropic substances such as triazolam/midazolam/zopiclone, methamphetamine, cocaine, cough medicine and ketamine spent an average of HK$3,000, HK$3,000, HK$2,570, HK$1,800 and HK$1,700 respectively while the corresponding figure for cannabis abusers was HK$860.

About three quarters (76%) of reported drug abusers in 2014 had criminal record, including drug-related offences (38%), non-drug-related offences (9%), and both drug-related and other offences (28%).
